Gov. Brian Kemp will be in Savannah on Wednesday to officially break ground on the expansion of the Savannah Convention Center. The ceremony will take place at 3:30 p.m. at the Center.

The Savannah Sports Council will host its 2021 Georgia Power Sports Awards Luncheon on Tuesday, May 11 at the Charles H. Morris Center. The luncheon will honor local athletes and partners who have excelled at their given sport, winner of the John S. Georgia Legislative Update

Last week at the Capitol, the Georgia General Assembly met for legislative days 28-31 out of 40. Crossover day, which was on Monday March 8, was the 28th day of the 40-day legislative session and was the last day that a bill can be passed in one chamber and sent to the next chamber. The Georgia General Assembly will be reconvened on March 15 for the 32nd legislative day.

HB 469, Rep. Ron Stephen’s bill that extends the historic tax credits for the rehabilitation of historic structures, passed the House and is now in the Senate for consideration. HB 112, would extend the COVID-19 liability protections for Georgia businesses until July 2022. It passed the House, and last week it passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee and can now be considered by the full Senate.

Savannah Welcomes Southwest Airlines

Officials from Visit Savannah along with Mayor Van Johnson and other city officials welcomed the inaugural flight of Southwest Airlines to the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport. The low-fare airline will offer non-stop flights from Baltimore/Washington, Chicago, Nashville, Houston, and Dallas.

Americans appeared to respond to the nation’s vaccination vision with increased optimism and record-setting travel sentiment and expected trips for their 2021. Still, the travel industry cannot lose sight that COVID-19 continues to be top-of-mind, with 43.1% of Spring Break travelers saying they remain “very concerned” about contracting the virus on their trip.
