The National Trust Honors MLK With $4 Million in Grants to Preserve Historic Black Churches, Including Savannah’s Historic First Bryan Baptist Church

The National Trust for Historic Preservation’s African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund has announced its first round of Preserving Black Churches grants totaling $4 million in awards to 35 churches. Historic First Bryan Baptist Church of Savannah, Ga, was selected from 1,266 funding proposals. Visit Savannah provided a letter to the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund committee in Washington DC in support of this request.

The national grant will assist First Bryan with restoration projects, including roofing, plaster and stained-glass windows, enabling the building to witness another two centuries of American history.
