Legislative Update

Last week, the House and the Senate agreed on HB 18, the FY 2023 Supplemental budget, and on Friday, March 10, Governor Kemp signed HB 18 into law. HB 18 is the $32.5M midyear budget. It includes $2M for the current expansion of the Savannah Convention Center, an additional $18M in intermodal aid to the airports in the state, taking the funding from $26M to $44M. Each Georgia public school will receive a $50,000 safety grant. HB 18 also provides that homeowners receive an extra one-time exemption on the value of their homes which, on average, will save each Georgia homeowner $500.

Savannah Convention Center Celebrates Construction Milestone

On March 8, the Savannah Convention Center held a “Topping Out” ceremony, a tradition to celebrate the last beam being placed for a project. Representatives from the Savannah-Georgia Convention Center Authority Board, Visit Savannah, and elected officials signed the steel beam and celebrated the milestone. Georgia Governor Brian P. Kemp was on hand to participate in the day of celebration.

Southern Living magazine announced the winners of its 2023 South’s Best Awards, ranking the region’s best cities and small towns.  Savannah was lauded as one of Southern Living’s “Best Cities,” coming in at #2 out of 20, while Tybee Island ranked as “Best Small Towns,” coming in at #7 out of 50.

Georgia Chamber of Commerce Celebrates International Women's Day Through Women Who Lead Conference

Allyson Harvin, Chairman of the Board of Directors, and Jennifer Davenport, Vice President of Community Affairs and In-House Counsel, attended the Georgia Chamber of Commerce’s inaugural Women Who Lead Conference.  The conference, which highlighted the accomplishments of women in business in our state, was held at the UGA Tifton Conference Center.

Visit Savannah attended the 2023 GACVB Annual Conference, where CVBs from across the state gather for educational sessions and leadership training. During the event, organizations were recognized for their outstanding achievements across the industry. Savannah received two notable awards.
