Chatham County Run-Off Election Voting Tomorrow, August 11

The Democratic Primary Runoff election includes races for Chatham County Commission in Districts 2 and 5, State House District 163, Chatham County Coroner, and the First District congressional seat.  For a listing of polling locations, click here.

Savannah City Council to Hold Public Hearing on Property Tax Revenue Increase on August 13

Each year, the board of tax assessors is required to review the assessed value of property in Savannah.   The current millage is 12.856. As the value of property rises each year, governments often find more revenue than forecasted when current millage rate is applied. Governments can consider rolling-back the millage rate to keep collections the same. If they do not roll-back the millage rate, State law defines this as a tax increase. While the millage may remain the same, you pay more due to the increased property value.  Businesses and individuals have 2 opportunities this Thursday, August 13 to speak at the City of Savannah’s public hearings and have your opinions considered.

Census Deadline Approaches as Census Staff Hit the Streets August 11

The timeline for the 2020 Census has been updated. All field data collections will be completed by September 30 in Chatham County. Door knocking in neighborhoods will begin on August 11 and with the deadline shortened by a full month, it becomes urgent for people to self-respond. Chatham County has a current self-response rate of 56.2%, this falls behind the state average of 58.8%. Now more than ever it is critical to remind friends, family, coworkers, and community members to fill out their questionnaire.

Governor Kemp Signs COVID-19 Business Liability Protections into Law

Last week, Governor Brian Kemp signed Senate Bill 359 into law which protects Georgia businesses from liability due to the transmission of COVID-19. The bill provides a heightened standard of gross negligence for three types of claims: (1) claims for transmission of COVID-19, (2) claims for medical malpractice related to COVID-19, and (3) claims against manufacturers of personal protective equipment (PPE). The final bill also contains a potential defense of “assumption of the risk” for business owners who post a sign warning of the inherent dangers of contracting COVID-19.

U.S. Travel Association – Weekly Travel Analysis and Forecast

Travel spending advanced for the second consecutive week in the week ending August 1st, doubling the prior week’s growth rate, albeit still a mere 2%. Importantly, the percentage loss improved last week to down 48% from down 51% the prior week.
