Last week, Leadership Savannah’s 2023 Class explored the City of Atlanta and the City of Peachtree Corners. The class listened to presentations from government leaders during their visit, including Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell McMurry, Policy Director for the Mayor of Atlanta, Chanel Zeisel, and Savannah City Manager Jay Melder. Community leaders shared insights on critical topics like affordable housing in their cities.

The Chamber hosted a joint meeting of the President's Council and Owner's Council last week with Dr. Michael Toma of the Terry Parker College of Business at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Toma provided a mid-year update on the state of the local economy, where he announced that our local economy is again picking up steam after some slight softening. Despite the setbacks the pandemic has caused, our local region has created more than 54,000 new jobs since 2010. In 2023, our local unemployment rate remains at or near historic lows with the creation of an additional 4,500 new jobs, including positive job growth in the tourism sector in 2022 and 2023.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is seeking comments on the proposed US 17/SR 404 Spur Bridge Major Maintenance Project (PI No. 0019219) in Chatham County, July 17 – 27. Comments collected will be part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document that is being prepared for the project and will be considered as the project team develops the maintenance plans. The proposed project will replace the existing cables, bridge bearings, and joints as part of the planned maintenance of the cable stayed bridge.
