The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce joined with a number of partner organizations to host the Georgia Senate Study Committee on Expanding Georgia’s Workforce at SEDA’s Board Room last week. Five State Senators along with other corporate and government representatives were appointed to the committee earlier this year and Savannah was chosen as the first meeting location. The members heard the honest truth from our region – we are growing and expanding our workforce is top of mind for our business community.

The organization is deeply saddened by the loss of John Reed, who passed away last week after a brief illness. John worked as the Operations Manager for the Visitor Information Centers for more than 15 years, where he was known for his quirky sense of humor, his kindness to others, his stories of traveling the world, and his gracious southern manners.

After 20+ years of service as director of Savannah’s Visitor Information Centers, Mava Byrd retired last week to begin her next journey in life. Mava has been an exceptional leader overseeing our Visitor Information Centers. From the renovations to the spaces on MLK and River Street to the creation and ideation of establishing a presence at the Georgia Welcome Center on I-95, to the recent addition of a new Visitor Information Center at City Market, Mava’s leadership has been a big part of the organization’s success.

Last week, the Visit Savannah marketing and sales team attended Destinations International’s Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas. This event brought tourism marketers from around the globe to connect with thought leaders from inside and outside the industry for two days full of learning and collaborating.

At more than 723,500 units, Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) handled record Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro/Ro) volumes in 2023. This marks an 185% increase of nearly 109,000 units over the previous year. Besides the expansion of existing business, GPA also added Nissan as a Brunswick customer in FY2023. Colonel’s Island Terminal now handles Nissan imports from Japan and Mexico.
