Last week, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson gave the green light to the Rock n’ Roll Marathon scheduled for November 6 – 7.
“Overall, and as most people can see, the Savannah hospitality and tourism industry has bounced back nicely and is recovering from the pandemic slump of 2020,” said Joseph Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah. “Welcoming back the Savannah Rock n’ Roll Marathon, at the same time as border openings in Canada and overseas, will help us to attract runners from around the nation and the world for this great event.”

At this lunchtime networking opportunity, participants will begin their meal with an appetizer course and networking with the people at their table, then after 20 minutes, rotate to another table to enjoy their entrée with another group. Finally, a third rotation will bring them to the third group of peers to enjoy a final course of coffee and dessert while they talk about who they are and what they do. After three rotations and a full meal, each attendee will leave with business cards from new potential clients and partners.

Longtime community and Chamber leader Ed Feiler, a founding member of Leadership Savannah, passed last week at age 86. After Leadership Savannah reformed in 1975, Feiler served as the organization's first president, promoting diversity and building relationships across communities that embraced different races, religions, and gender. Ed Feiler loved Savannah, and he loved fostering the growth and development of future community leaders even more. Leadership Savannah has named an endowed scholarship after Mr. Feiler to provide a one-time tuition contribution to a deserving applicant in honor of his life's work.

Give Change That Counts has officially launched their Txt2Give Change That Counts Campaign to help establish day centers for the homeless throughout Savannah and Chatham County. As the holiday and giving season nears, Give Change That Counts asks the business community to donate by texting “GIVE” to (912) 200-8753. Donations will fund the establishment of day centers that include start-up costs, renovations, supplies, coordination, utilities, and more.

The 165th Airlift Wing, a unit of the Georgia Air National Guard, celebrated its 75th-year last week. First arriving in Savannah in 1946, current and former members of the Georgia Air National Guard at the 165th Airlift Wing gathered to celebrate this incredible milestone and the Guardsmen who made it possible. Stationed at Savannah Air National Guard Base, this unit serves domestically and overseas, supports the community, and recently stepped up to defend the community amid the global pandemic.

The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center received a $42,000 grant from the Truist Foundation to establish an entrepreneurship academy. The Truist Entrepreneurship Academy will be a two-year training and development program designed to support small business owners and entrepreneurs.

SAVANNAH Score’s annual BizPitch will take place Friday, November 5, from 4 – 6:30 p.m. at GSU’s Armstrong Center. The event will feature eight finalists who will pitch their business idea to a panel of judges comprised of successful entrepreneurs, business people, and bankers. The three finalists receiving the highest scores from the judges will be named the “BizPitch Savannah 2021” winners.

Late last week, Governor Brian P. Kemp announced that e-waste recycling company Igneo Technologies will invest $85 million in opening its first U.S. electronics recycling facility at the Port of Savannah. This is expected to create at least 150 jobs in Chatham County once Igneo is fully operational. “Georgia continues to lead the nation in highly competitive projects, and it is great to see cutting-edge companies like Igneo choose our state,” said Governor Kemp.

The Visit Savannah Sales Team welcomed the International Assessing Officers Association (IAAO) to Savannah for a site visit in preparation for their August 2025 annual conference. IAAO is a nonprofit, educational, and research association. It is a professional membership organization of government assessment officials and others interested in property tax administration.
